Punisher Series Officially Coming To Netflix

The Punisher, the break out character of the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil has been rumored to be getting his own Netflix series for a while now, but thankfully those rumors can now be put to rest since it appears that a Punisher Netflix series has been officially greenlit.

The series will star Jon Bernthal, reprising his role as Frank Castle The Punisher. Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) will serve as the as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer on the series, which will follow Castle as he dispenses his own brand of lethal justice.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil,” said executive producer/head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, in Marvel’s official statement. “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.”

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”

This will be the sixth Marvel series to find a home at Netflix, following Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage (which is slated for September 30, 2016), Iron Fist (which is now in production), and the crossover miniseries The Defenders (which is set to begin filming later this year). At the moment it is unclear if The Punisher will join the upcoming team-up series, but EW says “it seems likely he’ll at least pop in.”

Daredevil Season 2 is currently available on Netflix.

Netflix Reportedly Plotting a Punisher Spin-Off Series

Originally posted on Capeless Crusader on January 19, 2016.

It looks like a rumor that popped up a few months ago about Marvel creating Netflix spin-off series for some of their other characters might actually come into fruition soon if this latest report is accurate.

According to TVLine, Jon Bernthal’s take on The Punisher is being so well-received by executives, a spin-off series for the character and star is now in development. The series would spin directly out of his appearances in Daredevil, and be another Marvel TV/Netflix collaboration.

“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people to second-guess themselves,” said exec producer Doug Petrie in a recent interview with EW.com. “Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t.”

Should The Punisher move forward at Netflix, it will be the first series that wasn’t a part of the initial Marvel/Netflix plan. The original lineup of series included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and a Defenders mini-series that will bring all four of those characters together. The first two series, Daredevil and Jessica Jones premiered in 2015 to both critical and fan acclaim, Luke Cage is currently filming, and Iron Fist is still in development.

In a recent interview, Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, revealed that the new series is a definite possibility.

“Any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.”

While Sarandos did not actually confirm the Punisher series, it definitely sounds like it is on the table along with any other character who has made an appearance on any of the Netflix/Marvel shows. If this is the case, maybe we could see a full or mini-series further down the line for characters like Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Rachael Taylor’s Trish Walker/Hellcat, Elodie Yung’s Elektra Natchios, or maybe even characters like Moon Knight if he appears in either Luke Cage or Iron Fist.

While it would be cool to see shows like that eventually, none of this is set in stone and it takes quite a bit of time to make only one thirteen episode season for just one of these shows. If Netflix does intend to make a series for Punisher or any other Marcel character not on their current plate, it might be a few years before we actually see any of them since the streaming service will most likely prioritize working on the current five Marvel shows that are already on their workbench before moving onto something new.

Jon Bernthal will be making his debut in the MCU as The Punisher alongside Elodie Yung as Elektra in Daredevil season two which will be hitting Netflix on March 18, 2015.

Daredevil Season Two Release Date Revealed

Originally posted on Capeless Crusader on January 7, 2016.

Despite rumors claiming that Marvel’s hit Netflix series Daredevil would launch its second season on the same day as DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the streaming service has finally set the record straight and has given us an official release date along with a new teaser and poster.

According to the teaser trailer, the second season of the show will arrive on March 18 and includes a more in-depth look at the battles Matt Murdock’s titular superhero will have to take on. This season will see the introduction of the Punisher as both the new vigilante in Hell’s Kitchen and the new antagonist that Daredevil will have to square off against. Other popular characters like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage might possibly make a crossover cameo appearance in at least one episode before they all come together to form the Defenders in the near future.

We even have a new synopsis for the season that you can find below:

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios.

Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.

New images were also released last week via Entertainment Weekly for the new season that included more detailed looks at Elektra (Elodie Yung) and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). Both characters play important parts in the Daredevil story, and will be making their first appearances in both the show and in the MCU.
