It looks like a rumor that popped up a few months ago about Marvel creating Netflix spin-off series for some of their other characters might actually come into fruition soon if this latest report is accurate.
According to TVLine, Jon Bernthal’s take on The Punisher is being so well-received by executives, a spin-off series for the character and star is now in development. The series would spin directly out of his appearances in Daredevil, and be another Marvel TV/Netflix collaboration.
“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people to second-guess themselves,” said exec producer Doug Petrie in a recent interview with EW.com. “Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t.”
Should The Punisher move forward at Netflix, it will be the first series that wasn’t a part of the initial Marvel/Netflix plan. The original lineup of series included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and a Defenders mini-series that will bring all four of those characters together. The first two series, Daredevil and Jessica Jones premiered in 2015 to both critical and fan acclaim, Luke Cage is currently filming, and Iron Fist is still in development.
In a recent interview, Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, revealed that the new series is a definite possibility.
“Any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.”
While Sarandos did not actually confirm the Punisher series, it definitely sounds like it is on the table along with any other character who has made an appearance on any of the Netflix/Marvel shows. If this is the case, maybe we could see a full or mini-series further down the line for characters like Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Rachael Taylor’s Trish Walker/Hellcat, Elodie Yung’s Elektra Natchios, or maybe even characters like Moon Knight if he appears in either Luke Cage or Iron Fist.
While it would be cool to see shows like that eventually, none of this is set in stone and it takes quite a bit of time to make only one thirteen episode season for just one of these shows. If Netflix does intend to make a series for Punisher or any other Marcel character not on their current plate, it might be a few years before we actually see any of them since the streaming service will most likely prioritize working on the current five Marvel shows that are already on their workbench before moving onto something new.
Jon Bernthal will be making his debut in the MCU as The Punisher alongside Elodie Yung as Elektra in Daredevil season two which will be hitting Netflix on March 18, 2015.
