Daisy Ridley Being Eyed to Play Lara Croft For The Tomb Raider Reboot

Video games have not had a good history when it comes to movie adaptions, but with films like Ratchet and Clank, Warcraft, and Assassin’s Creed coming out later this year, maybe there’s hope that we’ll finally start seeing some good video game movies in the near future. One of these future movies, the long in development Tomb Raider reboot, may have just made one major step forward if this latest casting rumor is to be believed.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros and MGM are making a list of potential actresses to play Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider games, and on that list is Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley. Conversations between Ridley and producers have reportedly occurred and are still in the early stages with no official offers reported to have been made yet. Deadline did not name any of the other actresses being considered for the role.

Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is set to direct the film based on a script from Transformers 5 scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

The original Tomb Raider films, based on the long-running Eidos (now Square Enix) video game series, starred Angelina Jolie in 2001 and 2003 as the adventurous archaeologist. The films got mixed critical reactions and reviews but were very profitable for the studios in the box office. Those movies were based on the older Tomb Raider games but the new movie will be taking inspiration from the two newest games in the franchise that came out in 2013 and 2015 that rebooted Lara as a young adventurer just out of college.

Ridley is currently in the middle of production for Star Wars: Episode VIII and with Star Wars: Episode IX set to follow not long after, the actress’ timetable for starring in another adventure film franchise could be slim. Then again, the new Tomb Raider film has no set official shooting or release date yet so maybe if Ridley’s schedule is flexible enough, we could still possibly see her play the globe-trotting adventurer.
