Marvel Reveals Their New Quasar

About a week ago, Marvel released a teaser image promising a “long-awaited return” which was tied into their Avengers: Standoff! storyline. It was recently revealed that the returning hero would be none other than Wendell Vaughn, also know as Quasar, along with a new wielder of the cosmic-powered Quantum Bands.

5720da8693dcbThe new Quasar is a female S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Avril Kincaid, and she’s the creation of writer Nick Spencer and artists Daniel Acuña and Angel Unzueta.

In an interview at Marvel.com, Spencer gave more details about the character and her origin:

Avril Kincaid is a high-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent stationed in Pleasant Hill when Baron Zemo stages his revolt. Seeing the crisis around her, she seeks out the most powerful weapon hidden in the town: the Quantum Bands. When she arrives to retrieve them, though, she’s greeted by a surprise—the owner of the bands and the original Quasar, Wendell Vaughn. He gives them to her, and from there, she uses them to help turn the tide of the battle in Standoff!. It’s a real “step up and be a hero” moment for Avril, and sets her on the path to becoming the new Quasar.

According to Spencer, this new Quasar will play a role in several upcoming titles, including his two ongoing Captain America series while also hinting at an appearance outside of those books in the near future as well in possibly either a solo series of her own or as part of a team series. The issue also teased the creation of a new Thunderbolts team so there’s always a possibility for that.

“We have big plans ahead for Avril; she’ll be a major player in some very important upcoming stories,” said Spencer. “You can definitely keep a lookout for her in the Captain America books, but I suspect she’ll be showing up elsewhere as well…”

Kincaid is now the fifth Marvel character to possess the Quasar name, after Vaughn, Phyla-Vell, Richard Rider, and Neutron. With her introduction only occurring recently, it will be some time before we know if she will be as popular with the fans as the previous incarnations of Quasar were.
