X-23 Rumored to Make Her Film Debut in Wolverine 3

The upcoming third installment in the Wolverine standalone movies has been gathering quite a bit of buzz since it will be Hugh Jackman’s last run as the character, possibly be based on the popular Old Man Logan storyline from the comics, and could also be rated R. Since this will be Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine, many thought that this would mean the end of having any healing claw wielding mutants in the future X-Men films, but if this latest rumor is to be believed than we could possibly see someone else take up the mantle of Wolverine after Jackman’s departure.

A recent rumor from SuperHeroHype suggests that X-23 might also be showing up in the film. The report follows a casting call sent out for Wolverine 3, which asks for, “Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian-looking females over the age of 21, a height of 4′ – 4’11, and a size 0-4,”.

That casting could be for any number of major or minor roles in the movie, but early thinking is leaning towards Laura Kinney aka X-23 at the moment. X-23 is a genetic clone of Wolverine who has two retractable claws in her hands and one in her feet. She first appeared in the show X-Men: Evolution before being later introduced into the comics. Over the years, Laura has become a very popular character in the X-Men comics and recently she has taken on the role of Wolverine after the events of the Death of Wolverine story.

No official statement from the filmmakers about the rumor has been given yet but if X-23 does appear in the movie, could we possibly be seeing a passing of the torch story where Jackman’s Wolverine allows someone who he views as a daughter take on his name as the new Wolverine in the X-Men film universe, a possible one-off character for the movie, or as just a little easter egg for fans?

Until we know for certain, fans can expect to see Wolverine 3, directed by James Mangold and starring Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, possibly Live Schreiber who is interested in returning to play Sabertooth again, and Boyd Holbrook as a villain, in theaters on March 3, 2017.
