Darkwing Duck Returns to Comics

Several months ago, an article circulated on the net promising a new Darkwing Duck animated series that would have both the “same energy and bumbling crime-fighting spirit” while also being a darker re-imagining of the character. It was eventually discovered that the article was merely an April Fools joke. While it is disappointing to hear that Darkwing Duck won’t be returning to television anytime soon, it appears as though we will at least be seeing him once again in the form of comics instead.

This April, Joe Books will be publishing a new Darkwing Duck ongoing series with writer Aaron Sparrow and artist James Silvani at the helm, both of whom have worked on the previous Darkwing Duck comic book that was published by Boom! Studios in 2011. Andrew Dalhouse, Deron Bennett, and Jesse Post will also be on the creative team.

The original Darkwing Duck animated series was a spin-off of DuckTales that aired from 1991-1992 on the Disney Channel before moving over to ABC. It featured the adventures of mild-mannered Drake Mallard who fought crime by night as the caped vigilante Darkwing Duck along with his sidekicks Gosalyn and Launchpad McQuac. The series was created by Tad Stones, who envisioned Darkwing Duck as a parody of several classic pulp heroes like Batman, the Shadow, the Sandman, Doc Savage, and the Lone Ranger.

Expect to see the new Darkwing Duck ongoing comic book series on shelves sometime in April, 2016.
