Now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally out, we will hopefully be seeing a plethora of expanded universe material soon that will help fill in what has happened during the thirty year time gap between Episodes VI (Return of the Jedi) and Episode VII. Thankfully it doesn’t look like we have to wait too long because Marvel has just announced their latest installment in their Star Wars line-up of books which will center on the best pilot in the Resistance, Poe Dameron.

star-wars-poe-dameron-1-cover-165822Launching in April, the series Star Wars: Poe Dameron by Charles Soule and Phil Noto will show how Poe became to be known as the greatest pilot in the Resistance. Handpicked by General Leia, Poe Dameron and a squadron of pilots fly the most dangerous and top-secret missions against the First Order. The series will also introduce a new threat from the First Order that will serve as Poe’s primary antagonist. BB-8 and some of the newly introduced X-wing pilots from the film will round out Poe’s supporting cast.

Poe, played by Oscar Isaac, has become one of the breakout characters from The Force Awakens. Soule told USA Today that seeing “people reacting to him so strongly now just feels like we’re hopefully in a great position.”

“Sometimes it can feel like the Star Wars universe is so well trodden and so many stories have already been told. But the way the Episode VII galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we’re working with is going to feel fresh and cool,” Soule teased of the first arc.

This won’t be first comic to feature Poe’s backstory. The mini-series Star Wars: Shattered Empire chronicled the tales of his parents who were both in the Rebel Alliance during and after the Battle of Endor before settling down on Yavin IV (the planet the Rebels were stationed on in Episode IV A New Hope) to raise their son, something that Oscar Isaac was thrilled about.

Noto has provided art for the Chewbacca mini-series along with cover art and illustrations for several of the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens novels, including a rendering of Poe Dameron for Before the Awakening.

Not only is Noto looking at The Force Awakens, but at several of Isaac’s other movies to see how to draw him in different physical and emotional situations.

“Seeing so much of him on-screen, it’s easier in a way to act that part out in my head while I’m drawing: How would Oscar Isaac act in this situation as Poe Dameron?” Noto said.

Expect to see Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1 on shelves in April, 2016
