Even though several on set images of next year’s Doctor Strange was leaked online a few weeks ago, we couldn’t get a clear idea of what Benedict Cumberbatch would look like as the Sorcerer Supreme. Thankfully we do now thanks to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly which has finally given us the first official look at Cumberbatch in costume as Doctor Strange.
According to the article, the photo shoot was one of the first times that Cumberbatch has actually worn the full costume. Filming only began in November, and isn’t set to wrap up until March, so Cumberbatch also took the opportunity to practice Strange’s signature hand gestures during the photo shoot.
“I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically,” says Cumberbatch. “I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”
After the cover was revealed, Entertainment Weekly then released a handful of other photos and concept art from the film, as well.
Aside from showing off more of Cumberbatch and the magic, the concept art also included a large set filled with plenty of mystical artifacts that is most likely the inside of the Sanctum Sanctorum, Dr. Strange’s mystical home in Greenwich Village, New York.
The concept art also reveals the aftermath of Strange’s accident, which rendered him unable to use his hands for surgery and drives him into the mystic arts.
Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson and co-starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and Mads Mikkelsen is set for release in November 2016.
