Marvel’s Iron Fist Gets a Showrunner

Originally posted on Capeless Crusader on December 7, 2015.

After the huge success of Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Marvel has been hard at work on their next Netflix series, Luke Cage. While the cast list for that continues to fill out, we have yet to hear anything about the status of the fourth Defender, Iron Fist. In fact, rumors were starting to suggest that Iron Fist might be off the table for Marvel TV and Netflix since they had no idea what to do with the character. Well it looks like that rumor can finally be put to rest now that we know that a showrunner has been assigned to the project.

According to and Heroic Hollywood, Scott Buck who has previously served as an executive producer on Dexter and a producer on Six Feet Under, has been named as the showrunner for the fourth and final solo series with Marvel and Netflix before they all meet for the Defenders.

Marvel describes Iron Fist as follows: “Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”

Aside from this, little is known about what the plan, timeline, and who will be in the cast for Iron Fist so far. Unlike the others, this character is by far the most “superhero” and the least “street-level” out of the four Defenders. While Daredevil hinted at some minor mystical elements which will come into play later, Iron Fist’s whole story is filled with mystical elements that include an ancient hidden city, super powered energy fists, and a fight with a dragon. All of this could be too much to take in for an audience at once and might be too much for the creators to handle in a thirteen episode series. Although with Doctor Strange a year away, maybe viewers will be more open to the idea and this premise of a mystical character like Iron Fist.

While it could be some time before we learn whats next for Marvel’s Iron Fist, fans can look forward to Daredevil season two which will be out some time in Spring 2016 and Luke Cage season one following later that year. Jessica Jones launched a few weeks ago to critical acclaim and will most likely be followed up with a second season.
