Between 1998 and 2001, Joe Madureira released his own creator-owned comic series named Battle Chasers which was published by WildStorm Comics under its Cliffhanger imprint until the series moved to Image Comics in 2001. Even though it was considered one of the most popular American comic book series in the late 1990s, it suffered from some pretty extreme scheduling problems which caused only a total of nine issues to be produced in its four-year run. Even with its short run, Battle Chasers has retained quite a cult following and after fourteen long years, Madureira plans to revive and continue the series as both an ongoing comic book and in a new arena of entertainment as well, video games.
Battle Chasers followed the adventures of a group of heroes including a young girl name Gully as she searched for her missing father with the help of Garrison, a legendary swordsman; Knolan, the crafty wizard; Calibretto, an outlawed Wargolem; and the notorious mercenary Red Monika. Eventually the group must join forces to rise against a madman whose dark reign threatens the very fabric that holds their world together.
Joe Madureira–a veteran comic book artist renowned for his work at Marvel Comics and in the video game industry, is heading up the revival of this series with his new studio, Airship Syndicate. Founded by Madureira and Ryan Stefanelli, the studio is composed of ex Vigil Games employees who worked with Madureira on his two Darksiders games before the studio was shut down. Now with the help of Kickstarter, they are going to be working together again to create Battle Chasers: Nightwar.
Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a video game set in the same universe as the comic that will feature JRPG-style combat with procedurally-generated dungeons and traditional 2D animation cutscenes during key story moments.
Nightwar will take place in an area called The Grey Line, where “nothing has ever come from, or survived entering.” Players take will be able to play as Gully and “her unlikely band of adventurers” as they venture into the territory and attempt to find her father, a great hero called Aramus that ventured into the Grey Line but has not returned.
Alongside the release of Battle Chasers: Nightwar, new issues of the classic comic series will continue where the story left off at issue nine and will also have connections to the game. For the comic, Madureira is planning to use a three-issue arc structure for the run with the first one being used to tie up the end of the original story from 2001. Madureira does not have a publisher or a set release date yet, but is excited to see the franchise evolve alongside his own tastes and experiences.
Since the Kickstarter has reached its funding goal, we will definitely be seeing Battle Chasers: Nightwar and the comic series sometime in the near future.
